Win Green
Future WAGS walk. Date pending.
In the South Wessex Downs, the summit of Win Green (277m/911ft) on the Wiltshire/Dorset border is well worth a visit. On a fine day, you can see for miles in all directions.
Win Green summit
At the highest point is a round clump of trees, mainly beech, that offers an extremely dark and cool escape on a hot day. And, nearby, there is a toposcope indicating the direction and distance to well-known landscape features which can be seen with the naked eye – including The Needles (32 miles) to the south-east and the Mendip Hills to the north-west.
The only other thing on the deserted summit of Win Green is a Trig Point. Trig points were once used to give surveyors a frame of reference before the advent of Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
Trig Point
This is National Trust land, and it is also designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) which means the South Wessex Downs ESA work with local farmers to protect the wildlife habitats, history and characteristics of the landscape. To dog walkers this means we should keep our dogs under control at all times and, in some sign-posted areas, lead them up.

Luckily, the car park is at the summit! This is especially useful as we plan to provide a picnic on this walk (at a small cost, as usual) and don’t fancy lugging everything up to the top of the hill on foot. Not only that, but the car park is free.
Sunspots
This walk/picnic will only happen if we can make up the numbers, so please email or phone us if you’re interested in joining WAGS for an afternoon at Win Green.
