Grovely Wood Walk

Saturday 6 December, 2008

We met at 1pm for an afternoon in Groveley Wood near Wilton. This was an ‘open to all breeds’ walk and three spaniels, a boxer and a bearded collie/border cross accompanied the GSDs (18 dogs in all).

We were very lucky with the weather, with bright sunshine and not a drop of rain. The sun had thawed that morning’s heavy frost and the ground was spongy and waterlogged. This made for some great mud-wading for the dogs.

Henry, the boxer, seemed to be in charge of the whole affair – rushing around and making sure that all the dogs stayed in line. By the end of the walk, Henry, bless him, was the only dog not plastered with mud, so perhaps he knew a thing or two.

After the walk and back at camp Heather produced two huge pans of beef stew with dumplings – enough to feed an army. While the stew was heating up, we all warmed our hands around cups of hot tea/coffee. Then, we all tucked into the stew, which was delicious. Some of the dogs thought so too!

Saturday was club member Tony’s 60th and, just as it was getting dark, we brought out a surprise birthday cake. For some reason we couldn’t get the candles to take a light and Tony, being the resourceful chap that he is, ended up lighting his own birthday candles, while JD looked on with enthusiasm.

Chocolate cake made a nice ending to the day and, as the temperatures plummeted (-4c was forecast for the night) we all made tracks for home. While loading up, Tony had placed the remainder of his birthday cake on the roof of his car and, yes, in the half-light he forgot about it and drove off with the cake still on the top of his car!!! Sadly, we did not get a photo of this.

Thanks to all the doggies that joined us – JD, Henry, Storm, Frankie, Bailey, Willow, Toby, Yogi, Max, Muffin, Nancy, Amber, Tyrone, Alfie, Brandon, Joe, Molly and Molly.
